Nightmare Country was my pitch for season 21, and they didn’t go for it. Completing it for Big Finish was like a return home. It was extremely liberating because as I’ve often quoted Eric Saward’s remarks in my rejection letter, ‘it’s another million dollar movie and we just can’t do them’. But in audio I had all the resources that I could possibly ask for. I didn’t stray very far from the original proposal that I’d made, which had been extremely detailed, right down to scene breakdowns and story beats. I followed that plan and I stuck to it, so what you’ve got is the closest thing possible to the show that never was. Even the original cast! How remarkable is that?
